Surviving Life at Sea » A SPORTS DAY ONBOARD

The crew of MV Shin Sapporo Maru
It was a sunny and lovely day during our sports day held onboard. Dated Nov. 21, 2010 (Sunday), ship’s underway to Tomakomai, Japan in position east of Marianas Island “North Pacific Ocean” 0800-1800H. The event composed of the following event:
  • Deck Billiard
  • Can Fishing
  • Ring Throwing
  • Basketball Shooting
We group 7 teams with 3 members in each team and every team was so excited and eager to win and be named as champion and win the prize. The most anticipating and most teams prepared was the Deck Billiard because it quite difficult that needs strategic planning and yes of course it is really fun to play. It is not the billiard game we know that we commonly play. It is quite different about its rules, the equipment and billiard table.

The BALLS we used is made of wooden pucks with 9.7cm in diameter, 2.3cm thick and weighing 120g which each ball numbered 1-4 colour red and white.

The STICKS is made of wood with 150cm long and topside diameter was 2.1cm with the grip of the middle measured 2.9cm. The bottom is flat concave socket for balls with 11cm wide and looks like a paddle.

Deck billiard court
The TABLE was ship’s deck flat form with holes painted and numbered 1-7 and located 6-7m away from each holes except for no.1 and Home. The ring of each hole measured 0.12m in diameter which balls will exactly fit on it that’s the reason why it was really a difficult game, but the theory of the game is likely same as billiard you hit the ball to shoot to the hole and score.

As the game goes on everybody was on their peak of excitement most specially those fighting for champion. You can really saw from their faces the seriousness of the game, the laughter in every missed shot and the smile that forget once for a while about the hard work onboard. It was really the time for us to enjoy and relax that refreshes our all mind. For every game one will named as champion Team no. 3 get their spot but the essence of the game was sportsmanship and the teamwork.

After all games finished and prizes was given to the winners next was the most awaited one the “Yakiniku Party” a Japanese term which means Barbeque Party all was really starving due to the game we played and for every cooked pork barbeque everyone was shouting “wow sarap naman ” and as well enjoying it then eating commence everyone was so quite due to all was so hungry and after as we all know in every occasion there always be an ending but it was really a happy, enjoyable and unforgettable day that we experienced in every both of us that in our every chapter of our book of life there’s a page written on this particular day.

We were thankful to our Japanese Capt., C/Office and C/Engineer for the event happened and all the Filipino officers, Engineers and crew of MV SHIN SAPPORO MARU “MABUHAY”

THANK YOU IOTC!!!
